Your House Isn't Messy. It's Just Working Against You

Welcome to Day 2 of the Ultimate Life Reset.

Today, we're sorting out your house.

Kidding.

Please do not start emptying cupboards.

There is absolutely no need to spend the next six hours surrounded by old birthday cards, mystery cables and clothes you're apparently keeping in case 2017 comes back into fashion.

We're doing something much smaller.

Yesterday, we looked for the little things making everyday life harder than it needs to be.

Today, we're looking at your surroundings.

Because sometimes you don't need to get more organised.

You just need your stuff to stop annoying you.

Find your annoying space

Most of us have one.

The chair that's wearing more clothes than you.

The kitchen counter where everything gets dumped.

The desk you can't actually use because it's covered in stuff.

The bathroom drawer you have to rummage through every morning.

The bedside table that's somehow accumulated a water bottle, three chargers, receipts, hairbands, a book you haven't opened since February and absolutely no available surface.

Pick one.

Not a room.

Not a floor.

One small space.

We're going to make it better in 20 minutes.

Set a timer

This is important because otherwise a quick tidy has a nasty habit of becoming:

Well, while I'm here I might as well sort this drawer…

And suddenly it's three hours later and you're sitting cross-legged on the floor reading an old birthday card from your aunt.

Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Now deal with what's there.

Put away anything that belongs somewhere else.

Throw away the obvious rubbish.

Move things you don't actually use.

Keep the things that genuinely need to live there.

We're not trying to make it Pinterest-worthy.

We're trying to make the space useful again.

Now make it work for Actual You

This is the bit that makes the biggest difference.

Look at the space you've just cleared and ask:

“What do I actually do here?”

Then make the space work for that.

If you're always searching for your keys, give them somewhere obvious to live.

If you forget to take your vitamins, put them somewhere you'll actually see them.

If clothes always end up on The Chair™, maybe you need somewhere easier to put clothes that aren't quite ready for the wash.

If chargers migrate around the house and disappear, give one a permanent home.

If everything gets dumped by the front door, maybe you need a basket there rather than repeatedly promising yourself you'll stop dumping things by the front door.

Work with your habits instead of constantly fighting them.

Your house doesn't need to look perfectly organised.

It needs to make sense for the people actually living in it.

The one-touch test

Before you're done, think about something you do every day in this space.

Can you make it take one less step?

Can the thing you use every morning live closer to where you use it?

Can something you constantly forget become more visible?

Can something irritating be moved somewhere more convenient?

Can you put a bin where rubbish actually accumulates instead of where a bin is apparently supposed to go?

Tiny changes like this aren't exciting.

Nobody is going to make a dramatic before-and-after Reel about moving their phone charger six feet.

But if it removes one tiny annoyance from your day every single day, that's exactly the kind of reset we're looking for.

Your reset

That's it for today.

One space. Twenty minutes.

Clear it, then make one small change that helps it work better for Actual You.

And when the timer goes off?

Stop.

We're not spring cleaning.

We're making everyday life slightly easier.

Here's to getting 1% better, one day at a time.
