The Pillow Mistake Almost Everyone Makes (It's Not About Softness)

If your pillow feels wrong somehow but you can't work out why, there's a good chance it's not the pillow itself. It's the size.

The mistake: matching pillow to comfort instead of to your sleep position

Most people choose a pillow the way they choose a jumper, whatever feels softest in the shop.

But a pillow actually has one job: keeping your neck and spine in a neutral line, level with the rest of your back, all night.

That job changes completely depending on how you sleep, which is why the "softest one" approach so often goes wrong.

Side sleepers need a firmer, higher-loft pillow, because there's a real gap to fill between your ear and your shoulder. Too flat, and your neck bends downward all night without you noticing.

Back sleepers need something thinner and softer, just enough to support the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head too far forward.

Stomach sleepers (the trickiest position for the neck, generally) need the thinnest pillow of all, sometimes none, a thick pillow here twists the neck sideways for hours.

Most complaints about "waking up with a stiff neck" trace back to exactly this mismatch, not the pillow being cheap or old.

Why this is so easy to get wrong.

Pillows are usually sold by softness, brand, or fill type — down, memory foam, hybrid — almost never sorted clearly by sleep position, so most people are left guessing.

And because a mismatched pillow doesn't cause sharp, obvious pain, just a low-level "something's not quite right" feeling, it's easy to blame the mattress, or stress, or just assume that's what necks feel like in the morning.

What to actually look for.

Side sleepers: a firm, higher-loft pillow, memory foam or a supportive down-alternative tends to hold shape best through the night

Back sleepers: a medium-loft, slightly softer pillow that still offers some neck support

Stomach sleepers: a thin, soft pillow, or in some cases skipping a pillow for the head entirely and placing one under the stomach instead.

If you sleep in more than one position through the night (most people do), a slightly adjustable pillow one where you can add or remove filling, solves the mismatch problem without needing three different pillows in rotation.

The right pillow isn't the softest one or the most expensive one, it's the one that matches how you actually sleep.

Worth checking which category you fall into before assuming your mattress, your stress levels, or your neck itself is the problem.

Until next time, here's to getting 1% better, one day at a time.
